Richard Vogel Shines in A Coruña: A European Gold with YRA Roots

History was made in A Coruña, Spain, as Germany’s Richard Vogel claimed the individual gold medal at the 2025 FEI Jumping European Championship—becoming the first rider in decades to win with just 0.01 penalties on the scoreboard.

It was a masterclass in precision and nerve, delivered by a rider whose path was once shaped by the Young Riders Academy. For YRA, it was a moment of pride—and a powerful reminder of the value of long-term investment in talent.

Another familiar name on the European Championship stage was Thibeau Spits, a YRA alumnus who contributed to Belgium’s team gold medal in A Coruña. Beyond this recent triumph, Thibeau continues to make his mark on the international scene: currently ranked 5th in the U25 global standings, he remains the highest-ranked Belgian rider in the category—a position he has consistently held over time.

From Academy to European Gold

Richard Vogel was selected as part of the YRA class of 2016, and while we take no credit for his talent, his success is a testament to what’s possible when opportunity meets dedication.

In the words of IJRC Director Eleonora Ottaviani:

“We don’t want to take credit we don’t deserve. But looking at the results, we can definitely say the program works.
I have to thank our remarkable selection panel—Jeroen Dubbeldam, Jens Fredricson, Thierry Pomel, Otto Becker, and Emile Hendrix—because over the years they have identified outstanding talents.

This has allowed us to offer support and provide an educational foundation that includes veterinary science, legal issues, public speaking… but more importantly, to explore topics like social license, respect for the horse as a partner, and understanding the work of institutions like the FEI and national federations.

Today, riding well is no longer enough. A true champion needs 360-degree preparation.

Over the past year, medals have truly rained down on us—Harry Charles with Olympic gold, four YRA alumni among the Top 12 at the Europeans (Hinners, Vogel, Hughes Kennedy, and Spits), and continued success at both Young Riders and senior level.

What matters most is that these riders serve as examples of attitude, determination, and professionalism—always showing deep respect for their horses.

We are also deeply grateful to Rolex, whose support makes this program possible, and to the shows that reserve entry spots for our athletes, giving them the stage to show who they really are.

With an Olympic gold, a European gold, and annual Young Rider golds, we are happy and proud. Thank you, riders.”

What’s next?

As the 2025 season continues, Vogel’s victory lights the way for a new generation. He’s not just a champion of today—he’s a symbol of what’s possible for tomorrow’s talent.

And as always, we’ll be cheering from the sidelines—proud of where our riders come from, and excited for where they’re headed next.
