Learning Beyond the Arena: YRA Returns to Lugano for the First Educational Seminar

Today, the Young Riders Academy family gathers once again in Lugano for the first Educational Seminar of the 2026 season, marking the beginning of four days dedicated to learning, personal development, and meaningful connections.

Hosted in collaboration with Franklin University Switzerland, the seminar reflects one of the core values of the YRA program: preparing athletes not only for success in the arena, but also for the many responsibilities that come with a professional career in equestrian sport.

A Program Designed for the Modern Athlete

Throughout the week, riders will participate in a diverse educational program covering topics that extend far beyond technical riding skills. The schedule includes sessions on horse welfare and management, public speaking, personal finance, mental coaching, social media, and the broader structures that shape international equestrian sport.

The seminar opens with an introduction to the Young Riders Academy program and its Code of Conduct, reinforcing the values and standards expected from the next generation of elite riders. Participants will then explore practical topics such as FEI horse documentation, vaccinations and identification systems gaining valuable insight into the professional side of horse management.

Understanding the Horse, Understanding the Sport

A significant part of the seminar focuses on equine health and welfare. Through a series of lectures led by veterinary Stephane Montavon, riders will deepen their understanding of subjects including dental health, the relationship between the horse’s head and skeletal system, hoof care, and common associated diseases.
These sessions reinforce one of the fundamental principles of the Academy: great horsemanship starts with knowledge and respect for the horse.

Developing Skills Beyond Competition

Alongside the veterinary and technical modules, the seminar places strong emphasis on personal growth. Riders will take part in workshops covering personal finance, public speaking, mental coaching, and digital communication, all designed to help them navigate the challenges of a modern sporting career.
The program also includes updates from the International Jumping Riders Club (IJRC), individual interviews and dedicated opportunities for athletes to develop their personal and professional identity within the sport.

Building a Community

While education remains at the heart of the week, the Lugano seminar is also an important opportunity for riders to strengthen the relationships that make the Young Riders Academy unique.

Shared meals, informal discussions, outdoor activities, and social moments create an environment where athletes from different nations can exchange experiences, build friendships, and learn from one another. From the traditional barbecue evening to time spent together outside the classroom, these moments often become some of the most memorable parts of the YRA journey.

Looking Ahead

As the first Educational Seminar of the season begins, the focus remains clear: helping young riders become well-rounded professionals, informed ambassadors for the sport, and future leaders of the international showjumping community.

Over the next four days, learning, discussion, and inspiration will take center stage in Lugano. We look forward to sharing the journey.
